10 fast and fuel-frugal sports cars
By Jim Gorzelany | Forbes.com – Thu, May 17, 2012 7:56 PM EDT

It doesn’t take a market research maven to determine that with gas prices still hovering around the $4.00 mark, fuel economy remains of paramount importance among new-car buyers. But what if your vehicular preferences run more toward the fast and the furious – can a true sports car be both entertaining to drive and fuel efficient?
The answer, surprisingly, is yes.
While the sports car market is still populated with plenty of gas-guzzlers, there are a number of models – some of which are among the quickest rides on the road – that boast downright decent fuel economy.
And while it could be said that anyone who’s able to afford a costly sports car could well absorb sky-high gasoline prices, consider the environmental effects of choosing a “greener” alternative. According to the EPA’s figures, the aforementioned 911 Carrera S will burn an average 10.3 fewer barrels of oil and spew 4.6 fewer tons of greenhouse-gas emissions annually than will either the comparably performing Lambo or Aston Martin. Such emissions include carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane, which are said to be major contributors to global warming. (For fuel economy and emissions ratings for all vehicles, check the EPA’s website at www.fueleconomy.gov.)
We sorted through both the EPA’s official fuel economy ratings and posted 0-60 mph times for all sport coupes/convertibles sold in the U.S. to compile a formidable list of ten models that can reach 60 mph in well under six seconds, yet achieve an estimated combined city/highway fuel economy of 22 mpg or better. These include fleet-footed models like the Porsche 911, Boxster and Cayman, the Lotus Evora, Nissan 370Z, Audi TT, Mercedes-Benz SLK, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Infiniti G37 and an unexpectedly frugal version of the venerable Ford Mustang.
While most of these cars offer the choice of either a standard stick shift or an automatic transmission, you’ll note that many models achieve their quickest 0-60 mph times and top fuel economy ratings with the latter, particularly if it’s a sophisticated dual-clutch automated manual gearbox. While such racecar-inspired transmissions can be operated by hand for a quasi-manual effect, in fully automatic mode they typically shift faster and more precisely than most humans could muster.
One caveat, however. The EPA’s ratings are based on standardized tests conducted under strictly controlled conditions on a dynamometer, which is like a treadmill for cars. Out in the real world lead-footed motorists will likely never achieve any of these models’ lofty estimates. The EPA cautions that “aggressive” driving (i.e. the manner for which sports cars are built) can reduce a vehicle’s gas mileage by as much as 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent in the city. As they say, your mileage may vary.
Given that corporate average fuel economy regulations here and in Europe are scheduled to rise significantly in the coming years, expect sports-car builders to pay added attention to their models’ mileage down the road. This will likely include expanded use of lighter-weight materials like aluminum and carbon fiber; all else being equal, decreasing a vehicle’s mass by 10 percent enables about a three percent increase in fuel economy. Expect widespread use of technology like direct fuel injection and turbocharging to help make smaller engines perform like larger ones, as well as a so-called stop-start function that automatically de-powers an engine while the car is at idle to save fuel.
We’ll also be seeing more hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric sports cars in subsequent model years. The recently discontinued Tesla Roadster proved that a battery-powered sports car could maintain top performance (0-60 mph in around four seconds) and use no gasoline at all. Porsche is currently testing a plug-in hybrid 918 Spyder “supercar” it plans to introduce in the fourth quarter of 2013. While it’s expected to break the bank at a reported $845,000, Porsche says the 918 Spyder will boast the equivalent of over 770 horsepower and get around 78 mpg (three liters per 100 km).
Now that’s really fast and frugal.
The latest version of the iconic Porsche 911 continues the brand’s tradition of combining stellar performance with responsible fuel consumption. Powered by a 350-hp 3.4-liter flat-six engine and optional seven speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission, the base 911 can sprint to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and is estimated at 20/28 city/highway mpg. The 911 Carrera S, which packs a 400-hp 3.8-liter flat-six, is even quicker at 4.1 seconds to 60 mph, but manages similar fuel economy at 20/27 mpg.

1954 Hot Rod Corvette Gets a New Lease on Life
1954 Hot Rod Corvette Gets a New Lease on Life
To paraphrase country singer George Jones, this is one old Corvette that's not ready for a rockin' chair.
John Muller of Arizona always liked the way first generation Corvettes looked, but motoring down the highway in the 1955 he once owned wasn't the ultimate driving experience.
Then he found a 1954 Corvette on eBay that he called "nearly a basket case."
By the time he got through with a two-year project at Hot Rod Express in Blue Springs, however, it was a different story. Hidden under that classic body now are a 5.7-liter, Corvette LS1 engine and a six-speed transmission, along with new brakes and suspension.
Unfortunately, one of his friends drove the car into an old oak tree a few years later, and it was time for another restoration, this time at Carriage and Motor Works in Kansas City, Kan.
Workers there completely took the car apart and repaired or replaced just about every body panel. In all, the work took about 1,700 hours and included a period-correct metallic blue paint on top of a fawn colored leather interior.
From the outside, clues are few that this is a super resto-mod, other than magnesium wheels and a lowered body. Under the hood, the original six-cylinder has given way to a late-model V-8.
1000 hp Twin-Turbo Stingray Headed to Barrett-Jackson
GM Design Director Kip Wasenko calls it “the Corvette Duntov would have built to win LeMans.”
Now some lucky and very wealthy – person will have the opportunity to buy this hand-crafted custom 1963 Corvette unlike any other in the world, complete with a jaw-dropping modernistic design and a twin-turbo, mid-engine setup that boasts 0-60 times below 3 seconds.
The Corvette V7 Twin Turbo will be on the auction block at the Barrett-Jackson Auction to be held in Palm Beach, Fla., from April 5-7.
Barrett-Jackson’s website defines the car as “a stunning reinvention or vision of the future,” and with the automotive industry's coveted GM Design Award resting snugly in its rear pocket, who can argue with that statement about this stunning vehicle?
The split window coupe has been “passionately resculpted and shaped with swooping lines and breathtaking style,” Barrett-Jackson boasts, and “the new cab forward design allows the motor to be viewed through the original rear window's openings.” In fact, the entire split-window area rises on pistons to let that magnificent motor be seen in all its glory.

And what a motor it is. The LS V8 engine has dynoed at a remarkable 1,067-hp and 915 lb.-feet of torque. Compare that to a ZR1's 638-hp and 604 lb.-feet of torque, and you have an idea of just what kind of monster is lurking underneath the Twin Turbo's sleek black exterior that features an industry first “suislide” articulating door system. We don't know exactly what that means, but if it's on this car, it has to be way cool.
Technically speaking, the Corvette features a custom tube dual ladder frame, Penske Racing fully adjustable suspension, huge six-piston Baer brakes with cross-drilled rotors, and custom HRE wheels resting inside Michelin's widest tires. It also has race-style seating from Cobra with full Crow harness system, along with conveniences like power windows and HVAC but no audio system. The only sound you'll want to hear when driving this car is the motor!
2013 Ford Mustang First Drive
Ford's Mustang has been answering the cry "power to the people" for nearly a half-century, and this year that power dosage inches up another eight ponies in the GT, but that's not important -- anyone who says they can feel it is all bluster. What's really cool about the 2013 Mustang -- apart from its new exterior lighting -- is that formerly exclusive high-performance hardware reserved for certain hard-core racer versions is now available on civilian models. The V-6 performance package can now be had with an automatic, while a new Track Package brings Boss 302 and GT500 items like a Torsen helical limited-slip differential and Recaro racingseats to the GT (with a manual trans). And automatic Mustangs at long bloody last get manual control with almost no second-guessing (it won't execute a shift that would frag the motor).
The Track Package rolls the Brembo hardware in with the Boss's 3.73:1 Torsen rear end, radiator, oil cooler, and performance brake pads for $2495. (The $1695 Brembo package remains available a la carte.) Fancy a pair of ultra-supportive and way comfy Recaro seats? That'll be $1595 well-spent for cloth, or leather if you've already popped for the $4000 Premium Package. That means a 420-hp GT with leather Recaros and a Torsen diff rings the register at $39,185 -- $5805 less than a 444-hp Boss 302 so equipped. Yes, please!
If the above hasn't provoked a stampede toward dealerships, the styling revisions may. Up front, a body-color grille surround looks a bit like GT500s past, and high-tech HID headlamps flanked by LED accent strips and LED foglamps are now standard -- further evidence of technology democratization. There's a new chin splitter that reduces lift in a meaningful way, and GT models get functional heat-extracting hood vents. The rocker panels are now body-color to give the car a more substantial, hunkered-down look. But the coolest styling revision is the taillamps. "I almost got fired over those taillamps," says chief engineer Dave Pericak, noting that with 12 LED circuit boards, they're way spendier than a few two-element bulbs. For each of the six lamp elements, one board controls the outer taillamp set of diffused LEDs, and another controls the inner section for the braking or sequential turn signal functions. Oh, and the center board in the middle segments also lights the white reverse-lamps. Set in a gloss-black panel on all models, they look quite sinister -- like vacant eye sockets. But the piece de resistance is the side mirrors, which shine a pony logo welcome mat in front of the doors when you order the premium and comfort ($650) packages. Too cool.

Lingenfelter ZR1 Goes Ferrari Hunting
Content provided by CorvetteBlogger.com
How do you think a stock Ferrari 458 Italia would fare against three other supercars?
Well, the Russian website Drag Times Info recently decided to find out by running the Ferrari in a mile drag race against an Audi RS6 Evotech Stage 2 Gran Turismo, a Nissan GT-R MK.1 AMS Stage 1, and a Corvette ZR1 Lingenfelter. You can watch the results after the jump.
In the first race, the 570-hp Ferrari pulls out to an early lead over the 750-hp Audi and winds up winning. The second race saw the 600-hp Nissan jumping to a quick lead and holding on for a victory. And in the final race of the day, the Ferrari moved ahead early but wound up losing by a second to the 750-hp ZR1.

Secret 220 mph Ferrari caught on camera!
New Ferraris are always surrounded with intrigue, but some more than others.
Ahead of its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show next week, an image of the Italian automaker’s upcoming F620 GT has surfaced on the internet.
Submitted anonymously to GTSpirit.com, the cell phone photo is said to show a silver-painted wooden model of the two-seat car in its final form. Until now, the car has only been seen wearing heavy camouflage, most notably in a video released by Ferrari itself. According to the photographer, an even more detailed red model was seen nearby.
Click here for more from GTSprit.com
Curvier, with a more aggressive face than the $410,000 Ferrari 599 that it is set to replace, the F620 GT is reported to have a 740 hp 6.3-liter V12 engine under its long hood and a top speed of 220 mph. Ferrari has said that it will be the most-powerful car it has ever made --but maybe not for long.
Rumor has it that the company is also working on a replacement for its legendary Enzo supercar and that it will have a 920 hp hybrid powertrain, possibly using a Formula One-style kinetic energy recovery system.
Intrigued? So are we.

5 Classic Car Insurance Facts You Need to Know
Classic car insurance is a nonstandard type of auto coverage that is designed to meet the insurance needs of specialty or vintage car collectors. Since this type of insurance is highly specialized, there are certain considerations and criteria that you need to be aware of before you can get one to cover your car. Here are some of the essential facts you need to know about this kind of car insurance coverage.
1. Types of Vehicles
In order for your vehicle to be qualified for classic car insurance, it needs to fall under any of three categories, namely: Veterans (cars created on or before December 1904), Edwardian (vehicles manufactured between January 1905 and December 1918), and Limited (rare, special interest or limited editions). Since there was a significant rise in the number of vehicles produced in the 1970s, not all cars built before 1974 can be considered classic cars. Only convertibles, foreign sports cars, 2-door sports cars, vehicles with big block V8 engines or unique body shapes, and certain 4-door sedans can be considered collectibles.
2. Age Limitations
In most states, a car should be at least 15 years of age before it can be considered a classic car and, hence, eligible to get classic auto insurance coverage. In other states, which include Massachusetts, the minimum age required for a vehicle to qualify as classic or vintage is 25 years. However, there are some car insurance providers that are willing to offer classic auto coverage to cars that are under 15 years of age, provided that such cars are considered as cherished vehicles or are extremely rare or exotic.
3. Driver Background
If you want your car to be eligible for classic car collector insurance, you should know that, aside from the age of the car, there is also an age restriction when it comes to the driver. Only people who have reached the age of majority can get this type of auto coverage. Furthermore, insurance companies are very strict when it comes to the driving history and experience of the declared drivers who use the classic vehicle.
4. Storage Requirements
Classic car insurance providers also have strict storage requirements for vintage or classic vehicles. If you want your car to be covered by classic auto insurance, you have to make sure that your car is not parked outside your home and that it has a designated and highly secure garage. In fact, insurance companies even encourage vintage car owners to park their classic cars in car storage facilities specifically designed for storing and securing car collections.
5. Usage
In order for your classic vehicle to qualify for classic collector coverage, it should not be used as your primary vehicle. Even if your car can be considered a rare vehicle, it will not be eligible for classic auto insurance coverage if you use it every day. Only classic cars that are used on a limited basis can be eligible to get nonstandard classic auto coverage. Moreover, classic car insurance policies usually have mileage restrictions of just around 5,000 miles annually.

Appraisal and Kelly Blue Book
-
You've probably heard the term "blue book" before, but you might not know what it means. Is it like a little black book? Sort of, where cars are concerned.
What's a "Blue Book," and Why Should I Care?
A "blue book" refers to Kelley Blue Book . First published in 1926 by company founder Les Kelley, the book is named after The Social Registry, a book that listed the names of local movers and shakers commonly referred to as the "blue book."
Through the years, the book has become a trusted source of information for the automotive industry, sort of like an industry bible. It's kept up with the times, turning into a viable online resource. Use this "book" as a reference for obtaining important information on new and used cars as well as motorcycles and recreational vehicles. It's especially useful to determine a fair price on a vehicle.
Kelley publishes several versions of its books for different types of users. We'll take a closer look at two versions widely used by consumers.
Kelley Blue Book New Car Price Manual
Not surprisingly, this book offers information on new cars. Like what?
Manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP): This is the price suggested by the manufacturer, and it is (gasp) usually inflated. Included in the MSRP are the destination charge for the vehicle and the minimum required equipment cost. Kelley Blue Book also lists this information separately.
Dealer invoice: This is the price the manufacturer charges the dealer for the car. It doesn't include dealer expenses such as advertising, sales commission, and preparing the vehicle for display. Know this price before you begin looking at price stickers on the dealer's lot.
New car blue book value: This is the average selling price of the vehicle, taken from actual sales of the vehicle from dealers throughout the country. Often, there are regional price differences, due to variations in demand. A convertible in Seattle might be cheaper than one in San Diego.
Optional-equipment price: Want to know how much that optional sunroof will cost? Kelley Blue Book lists the price of certain options.
Kelley Blue Book Used Car Guide
Here's where you'll find the nitty-gritty on used cars, such as:
Retail value: This is the average listing price by dealers around the country. It's important to note that this is only the typical "asking" price on the vehicle, and that the actual selling price will usually be less. Sometimes a lot less. Because the retail value includes dealer costs such as advertising and sales commission, it will be higher than the private-party price.
Private-party value: Here's where you'll find an estimate of the price of a car if you were buying it from your next-door neighbor. Because an individual doesn't bear the burden of a dealer's overhead, this price will be lower than the retail value. Be aware, though, that the price isn't set in stone, since Kelley doesn't track all private-party used car transactions throughout the country.
Trade-in value: This is the typical price that a dealer would offer you for your used car. Again, this price is lower than what you'd receive from a private buyer.

What is Book Value and What Sources Are Used in a Certified Auto Appraisal
What is Book Value?
Book value is a guide for someone to use when determining the value of their vehicle. Whether it be for resale or an insurance claim, book value generally shows whole sale, trade-in and retail values for a particular vehicle. Some guides will even offer options that will increase the value of your vehicle.
What sources are used in a Certified Auto Appraisal?
The most recognized source for Book Value is NADA. NADA stands for National Automobile Dealers Association. NADA will show you values from whole sale to retail. Black Book USA is also a recognized book value. Always speak with your representative to see which book value is used before performing your research on the value of your vehicle.

Sibling Rivalry: 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and 2012 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport - Automobile Magazine
Chevrolet knows damn well how to build a sports car. Evidence: the Corvette. Ever since the mid-1950s, it has defined the very idea of what an American sports car is. Attempts to create a second Chevrolet sports car, however, have been met with less success. Excepting the Chevelle SS and a handful of Camaros -- and maybe the Corvair Monza if we're being generous -- it's been rare to find a performance Chevy as inspired as the Corvette. The 2010 revival of the Camaro raised our hopes, until its sloppy handling and performance-numbing obesity torpedoed our expectations. The 2012 Camaro ZL1 changes all of that with huge power, sophisticated technology, and exceptional handling.
As the Camaro to redeem all other Camaros and a car that can run against Chevy's icon, the ZL1 sets the stage for the most dramatic sibling smackdown since my sister dropped a log on my four-year-old head. The Chevrolet marketing folks are adamant that no one will cross-shop a Corvette and a Camaro, and that may be true. Problem is, someone dropped a log on my head as a child, so I can't help but draw imaginary parallels between two bow-tie sports cars with mid-$50,000 prices and four-second 0-to-60-mph times. When Chevrolet invited us to drive the Camaro ZL1 for the first time, we showed up with a pair of driving shoes, our Vbox test equipment, and a Corvette Grand Sport.

Acura uses the Detroit Auto Show to reveal the new NSX Concept Car - Automobile Magazine
Acura used the Detroit show to reveal the NSX concept, a long-awaited return of the Japanese company’s legendary supercar. The wait isn’t quite over, as the real NSX won’t debut until at least 2015, but this aggressive concept gives serves to whet our appetite. The wide, low coupe wears Acura’s signature shield front grille, with wide rear haunches, and plenty of aggressive air intakes. Propulsion will come from a new hybrid drive system: a V-6 engine powers the rear wheels by way of a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, while a pair of electric motors turns the front wheels. Total system power is a solid 400 hp.

Texas Auto Insurance - Minimum Coverages Required
Texas Auto Insurance Information
You must have enough liability insurance to pay up to $30,000 in medical expenses for each person injured in an accident, up to a combined total of $60,000 for everyone who was hurt in an accident. You also must have at least $25,000 in coverage to pay to repair or replace the other driver´s car. Because of these coverage amounts, basic minimum liability coverage is often called "30/60/25 coverage."
Medical care and vehicle repair or replacement costs can be expensive. Therefore, minimum coverage might not be enough to cover your financial obligations if you cause a serious accident. It´s a good idea to consider raising your coverage limits. Raising your coverage limits will raise your policy premium, however.
